After doing some extensive shopping I have come to realize it must be very difficult to shop for women. With all the time I spend trying on and thinking over my purchases, it must take hours of pain and agnoy for men to do it. So to make it a little easier on the guys this year, I have come up with some tips on girlfriend/wife/sister etc. shopping. Here they are:
1. CHECK FOR COLOR - Notice what general colors she wears. This doesn't mean you have to know her exact palette of shades, just get a general idea. For example, don't go getting her that super cute bright pink anything if she's always in browns and blues.
2. WATCH FOR FIT - "size" is pointless, everything fits differently.
For Clothing: Sneak a peek at one of her similar pieces (e.g. if you are getting a sweater, check a similar sweater, not a blouse or dress - every category of clothing will run differently). If you can, just "borrow" one and use it for reference. So you know: Old Navy and Gap run big so use your judgment and consider going down a size. This is true for other places as well.
For Shoes: Follow the same tips for clothing. Now with boots, make sure you know how she wears them. Some women get a half size bigger shoe in the winter so they have room to layer on socks. This is especially true for rainboots. *Also: If you are buying in-store, ask the salesperson if the shoe runs "true to size" (as in the size 8 fits like an average 8, some winter shoes -like Uggs- run a full size big).
3. CONSIDER HER STYLE - Keep an eye out for her preferences in style/size. Does she wear her jewelry, purses, etc big and loud. Does she wear smaller more delicate pieces? Keep this in mind when picking anything.
4. BE CAREFUL WHEN ASKING SALESWOMEN OR FEMALE SHOPPERS FOR HELP - This is the worst IMO. Most saleswomen are there just to sell, they don't actually care about you or helping you find the perfect gift. Many female shoppers might misunderstood your intentions - so be aware of this.
5. ASK ABOUT THE RETURN POLICY - Simple question when you come in, just ask "What's you return policy?". Be aware, many places have different policies for jewelry, shoes and clothing - so be specific. Many places will only do exchange or store credit no matter what it is. Ask!
6. DON"T WORRY - Ultimately gifts are all about the effort and thought. Anyone worth giving a present to, won't care if you didn't get them something spot on, they'll love knowing you tried.
So try your best, keep the receipt, and you will be fine.
Happy Shopping
