I have spent the holidays catching up on the last three seasons of Mad Men and all I can say is -wow! I love the show and am officially hooked. It is really one of the best I have ever seen. Now, content and filmography value aside, Mad Men is amazing for another reason: Fashion. This series has redefined what it means to get dressed - it makes me want to spend my days dressing up. I also love how the show has stayed true to its period and featured the feminine curves the 60's were known for. The idea of a series actually encouraging its actresses to play up their natural physique and in some cases (umm January Jones?) add on some curves is exciting - Maybe this will start a new trend?
So in the spirit of Mad Men (and body loving) fashionableness - My 4 favorite trends from the show:
1. Red lips - You cannot get more feminine that red lipstick. Plus, I happen to believe the most attractive thing on a woman is her smile so play it up! Match with your red nail polish and you will look movie star glam no matter what you are wearing.
2. Fitted waists - I love attire that emphasize a woman's waist because no matter your size or shape - an accetuated waist is flattering. Belts are an easy way to accentuate what you have - if you are curvier go with a wider belt, if you are more on the curveless side, go with a thinner belt. Fitted short blazers and wrap dresses also work well. My favorite look is high-waisted fitted skirts (fitted, not tight - this is difference between hugging the curves and hugging the underwear, not cute).
3. Soft waves - I have always preferred waves and curls to straight hair. The soft wave brings back that old Hollywood style but is still modern enough to wear casually on your everyday.4. Color - As a New Yorker I love black attire. However with all this bad weather on the East Coast, it might be time to brighten it up with some color. The women of Mad Men really embrace color and patterns and mix them all up - try adding a bold addition to your outfit. Orange, purple and pink were seen all over the Spring runways this year. If this is too bright for you, try adding color through accessories - earrings, rings, and brooches all work great.
Whatever your style - it is always fun trying something new. Style your own Man Women look and email at hymandherr@gmail.com to post on the Hym & Herr site.
Mad Men is an awesome show. Definitely one of the better shows in the past few years.
