Top 10: The Essentials of a Great Wardrobe

I recently spent 4 weeks clearing out my room and ridding myself of anything I didn't absolutely need (spurred on by watching one too many episodes of "Hoarders" I think). I ended up with about ten bags, most of them filled with clothing - Apparently I owned a bunch of crappy clothes, excuse my language.

This got me thinking about the essentials of a great wardrobe. I've concluded you only need a few Classic basics and the rest are just add ons - think: a few great pieces and save the trends for your accessories. To help with this (and keep myself on track), I thought I would write a post on the 10 wardrobe staples every woman should have.

Here they are:

1. Blazer - Nothing has made its mark quite like the Blazer. They are timeless - I actually have been wearing one my mom bought in the early 90's. Any style
and color works. I suggest a Black tuxedo style (like the one at right) for anyone set on buying one great blazer - it's the most versatile. Blazers can be easily made formal or casual and radiates effortless chicness.

2. White t-shirt - The white blouse has been named a fashion staple in just about every magazine article ever written. I would like to offer up a more modern option that is equally as timeless and versatile - the white t (properly fitted of course). I am personally obsessed with them, I am wearing one as I write this, and have owned about 20 of them. I love them. A white t is the perfect casual top and yet can be quickly dressed up. They are comfortable and go with everything - a perfect solution to the "What will I wear today" question.

3. Thin leather belt - Braided or not, this piece is like ketchup - its goes with everything and makes most things better. Whether adding a cute touch or adjusting a fit, a thin leather belt will always come in handy. It also helps change up an outfit you've already worn - always a plus.

4. Denim Jacket - Throw it on for a perfect casual look. Layer to get more use out of it. A classic blue medium wash is perfect for all looks (try to stay away from the ripped, bleached, or cropped looks).

5.Cardigans - Every wardrobe's best friend, both light and warm at the same time, Cardis are great solo or as layering pieces. I suggest investing in one stand out piece (like the one at right) that luxes up any outfit; pick up a second less expensive and casual option to be worn over and over. Both should be quality made and in a shade you love to really get the most use out of them.

6. Skinny Jeans - Everyone needs a dark wash pair of skinny jeans. Skinny came out a fewyears ago and has outlasted all the other styles that have emerged since. Dark washes are best -they
look dressier (and more expensive) than lighter washes.

7. Leather Jacket- Black, brown, creme, whatever. They will all work. Just pick one that fits you great. Cropped or waist length are both classic cuts - keep away from the more embellished style, these will not always look stylish to you, trust me. On the cool days it can be a light jacket paired with your fave scarf, throw a hoody/cardi underneath with your fur vest on top and you're good for Winter.

8. Leather purse - A carry-all style in leather is a simple yet stylish handbag that will always go with your outfit. Choose a neutral color for a safe yet stylish option or go daring and pick a bold color and treat it as a neutral anyways.

9. Flat Riding style boots - These flat boots are timeless and comfortable without compromising on looks. Invest in a stylish leather pair and you will find yourself wearing these from Fall to Spring for years to come. Black or tan are both perfect options. Genuine leather only gets better with time and the worn-in look is always in. I personally am going into the 2nd year of a Coach pair and love them more now than ever.

. Fur vest - Need I say more. I have done two posts on how amazing and versatile these things are. All I have to say is, faux is in so we can all afford it and if you have the $ for a real one please buy me one too (Michael Kors collection - the white and red fox one, thanks).

Herr Suggests: I too love trendy pieces- but save these for your accessories. Leggings and scarves, for example, are an affordable way to add at "of the moment" trend to your outfit.

NOTE: Ff you are against leather, go for faux BUT still look for quality - there is such a thing as great faux leather. Nothing is worse than cheap looking "leather", real or faux.
