Ease into Fall: How to Transition Your Summer Wardrobe

So ever since I wrote about faux fur vests, I have been keeping an eye out for other great pieces. I was in the middle of checking out one at Zara when a woman walked right past me wearing the vest I was holding. I thought she looked crazy since it was still too hot outside until I noticed she was simply trying the vest on. This is when I realized that we still have another three weeks of warm/slightly cool weather before any of the heavier stuff becomes appropriate - so I thought a post on transition pieces might be helpful. As September marks the unofficial transition into Fall, here are some ideas for taking your summer pieces into the cooler days ahead of us:
DRESSES - These can
easily become Fall pieces by adding some leggings or tights and your favorite cardigan or blazer. Try having some fun with your tights - like in the picture to the left. Thankfully last Spring's floral patterns are still on trend for Fall so almost all your dresses should work for this look. For those of you that are more daring you can take a page from Marc Jacob's book and throw a turtle neck (try navy colored) under your dress for added warmth and style. If you are feeling ever more daring, try forgoing the tights and leggings and pair your summer sandals with trouser socks for a truly on trend look - just stay away from espadrilles.

SHORTS - Grab your best fitting shorts and put them over sheer tights or knee highs - any pattern/color for either will work. This is a look that was everywhere last year and has come back this season. For the best outcome, pick shorts with a middle length (think: halfway between your knee and butt, minus an inch). Pair this look with the blazer or cardigan you wore with your dress and you are done. Any style shoes can work; you can go casual with oxford style flats or dress it up with embellished pumps. You truly cannot go wrong with this - try out a few looks until you find something you like or just copy the girl from this picture (left) who looks great.
*Note: The very same can be done with skirts - all looks and fabrics are in this Fall.

CARDIGANS - After you have transitioned your dress and shorts, get even more use out of your cardigan by doubling up. Pair two cardigans with different styles - for example, try a simple one-tone long sleeved cardigan under a more embellished or multi-toned shorter one or vice versa, as seen below. The key here is to wear them so that each one can be seen. This will add some dimension to your outfit and is an easy way to dress up a plain ensemble. I myself will be experimenting with stripes this Fall - you can try it too, just pair horizontal and vertical striped cardigans, or stripes that vary in color and width. You can also try layering two different animal print or the same print in different colors - just make sure to go more simple with the rest of your ensemble to avoiding looking crazy. Also, try digging up your old cardigans and use these as your bottom pieces - you can throw newer cardis on top and no one will be the wiser.

Herr suggestion: Stretch all these looks out by changing your sandals and flats for boots with leg warmer-like socks or booties. Go with thicker leggings or jeggings with those dresses and trade in sheer tights for thicker and darker ones for your shorts and skirt look. Also layer on scarves and add a trench or faux fur vest for added warmth.
